    Hazel & the weekend

    October 30th, 2007

Well Tuesday has arrived & is nearly over but I still haven’t updated you on the weekend.

The weather was glorious here so we took advantage of it on Saturday. Richard put the white edges on the pig barn so it matches the cow barn. Michael tidied up & both guys finished cutting down the dead tree. Michelle cleaned out the four chicken & turkey pens & I cleaned out the ducks & cows. SO you could say we scooped alot of poop between us! LOL!

As I went down to the cow barn for the umpteenth time I finally remembered to take the camera with me & took a picture of Hazel. I have told her that it would be really nice if she had a little heifer calf that looks as pretty as her. Although saying that this pic doesn’t do her justice - obviously she is not very photogenic.

    Hazel

Sunday was a wonderful day of rest. Yesterday, Monday, the workmen started roofing the cow barn - looking good. Hopefully tomorrow they’ll be back to do the pig barn so that those buildings can be finished. Yesterday afternoon we opened Kinder Eggs. Now if you are from Canada or Europe you will know what I am talking about but if not, let me explain. Keri sent us 6 Kinder eggs - one each. Kinder eggs are really for kids - they have an outer layer of milk chocolate & an inner layer of white chocolate. Inside the chocolate is a plastic capsule with a toy inside. SO anyway we sat out on the trampoline & had a Kinder Egg picnic then we bounced. FUN!

Leggy is doing great. Richard thinks she is a girl. When she was first with us she didn’t know how to clean herself & the other cats just hissed at her. Things have changed now, KitKat has adopted her & is cleaning her & looking after her so she is now clean. Isn’t this sweet?

    Leggy & KitKat

Have a great rest of the week,

    Liz

3 1/2 lbs was the answer!

    October 30th, 2007

Yes so 17 of you got the answer right! Good for you. I did make 3 1/2 lbs of butter & yesterday made another 2 lbs.

Some of you mentioned that we must be getting ready for the holidays. In all honesty we really don’t eat more over the holidays and certainly don’t do extra baking. We eat well all of the time LOL!

I think the only extra we eat over Christmas is Roses Chocolates. We import them from England & they are our treat when playing cards of an evening.

But now I’m waffling & you are waiting for me to announce the winner.

    Loud drum roll……………

    The winner is:

    #9 - Pegg

    Huge congratulations to you.

    Liz

I’ll be back soon with farm updates.

    It’s been a while…

    October 27th, 2007

…..since I gave away some blog candy so here goes!

Winter is on its way pretty soon here. The nights are getting colder - last night is was 15F here & can you believe it but Christmas is only 2 mths away SO I figured you would appreciate thinking about summer.

    Summer Fun Giveaway

All you have to do to have a chance at winning this fabulous Summer Fun set from Kim Hughes along with the magazine is answer the following question:

How many pounds of butter did I make on Thursday?

    • a) 3 lbs
    • b) 3 1/2 lbs
    • c) 4 lbs
Yes we had a whole load of cream & that was only 4 days worth.
Someone called me about a Jersey cow yesterday & my family were SO thrilled when I said “NO”. Instead I found her a home with friends of ours who needed another milk cow so that is good.
Hope you all have a great weekend. We have to get things finished up outside today plus I have a load of new stock to put on the store.

    Puss N Boots is grounded!

    October 24th, 2007

Oh my goodness, I had no idea it was SO long ago since I wrote on here. We had company for a week & so life was even busier & I am now just getting back into the swing of things.

Yes you read the title correctly! Puss N Boots is grounded! He is one of our indoor ginger cats who loves to be outside. Kitkat, his sister, rarely puts her nose outside the door let alone a foot. Anyway Puss disappeared on Monday & did not return. By yesterday afternoon we figured he had got a little too adventurous & had been caught by something. However sat at the dinner table Michelle & I heard his ominous meowing! He was home & hungry. Michelle was not pleased with him & told him in no uncertain terms that he was grounded :) In fact Daniel let him out this morning & she went out & got him.

What else has been going on here? Well as I said we had friends in for a week so got to play cards most evenings which was nice.

Richard finally finished fixing up the pig barn & Wayne & him painted it on Saturday so now all we are waiting for is the new roofing. Richard even put plexi glass in the window so it is really posh.

We took a lovely walk through the fields & down to the river on Sunday before folks descended on us for lunch & church.

Here is a pic of Richard, Andrex & Daniel with Charity, Nathanael & Wayne behind & to the side.

    Sunday Morning Walk

Is this a beautiful scene or what?! This is our slough or ox bow lake - whichever name you prefer.

    Sunday Morning Slough

Here is Roxy waiting for Bella to bring the stick which she promptly stole as soon as Bella landed!

    Sunday Morning Dogs

Yesterday & today the weather has been glorious - today it was nearly 80! Yesterday we got all the potatoes dug & Richard pulled up all the irrigation etc. The chickens & turkeys are now in there cleaning it all up. Today we picked up “stuff” that was lying around & Richard took a big load to the dump. He started cutting down two dead trees by the house & will finish another day.

The weather is supposed to go COLD tomorrow so we were enjoying the warmth while we had it.

    Have a great week,

    Liz

    Kitten Antics!

    October 15th, 2007

    Happy Monday to you!

Hope it was a good one. I’m just taking a break from packing orders but have to get back to it soon as I know you are chomping at the bit to get the Thomas Kinkade images - Tee Hee!

Well it seems to have been a cat day here today!

First thing this morning Michelle brings in one nearly dead kitten who had somehow got shut in the chicken coop overnight. It is always dark when we go out to shut in the chickens so a kitten would never be noticed unless it was crying. PLUS our barn cats never let us near their kittens so they are really wild. Anyway, in she comes with this kitten. It was not moving but was breathing. Its tongue was cold so we knew it was hypothermic.

Michelle put it in a fleece in the laundry basket & turned on a heat lamp. She went off to work & I truly expected the kitten to die. WRONG! By this afternoon Daniel had introduced the kitten to most of the house & this kitten is as friendly as can be - incredible. A really loud purr. He/She is not very old but is eating solid food. Here it is in the laundry basket which, by the way hasn’t been used as a laundry basket for at least 2 years, maybe more :) It doesn’t have blue eyes - that was just the flash on the camera.

    Leggy

Unfortunately it looks like that at sometime very early on it has broken both its front legs as they are turned in & it walks on its knees. Of course you know what that means - we cannot turn it out in the barn as it will not survive. #3 cat has now been added to the household! Here it is tucking into some dinner. Richard has called it Leggy!

    Leggy Eating

If that wasn’t enough adventure for one day, later on this morning, Daniel took off one of the heating vents & Kitkat decided to go exploring! She got stuck! GREAT! Finally Michael pulled her out & all was fine.

So yet again, life has not been boring here.

    Have a great week,

    Liz

    Sugarbeet Festival

    October 13th, 2007

    Howdy folks!

Today was the Sugarbeet Festival here in Chinook. Chinook used to grow alot of sugarbeets. In fact we have a migrants cottage on our property from that era, which one day we are going to restore.

Anyway the day started off with me making butter. We had SO much milk here that each chicken/turkey pen (4) got a gallon of milk plus the dogs had their share so everyone was happy this morning. Of course I had taken most of the cream off & made a load of butter. I have really got this buttermaking down now. Once it comes out of the blender and has drained it looks like this:

    Butter

So all I have to do is rinse it, mush it & add salt. I put some in the freezer & the rest I have used to bake with.

Then it was time to take part in the 3 mile fun run/walk. Michael ran & came first! Richard, Michelle, Daniel, Hannah & I along with Roxy & Bella walked it. The dogs did really well on their leashes considering that most of the time they don’t even have collars on. In fact Roxy was probably the best behaved dog on the walk - she heeled most of the way.

    Sugarbeet Walk

We came home for an early lunch & put Hannah down for a nap. Richard cleaned the hallway which is always quite an undertaking. Our hallway is large with stairs going in both directions to various parts of the house so it often ends up looking more like a junk room than a hallway. We are headed up to friends for lunch etc tomorrow so I baked a Raspberry & Rhubarb Streusal cake. These friends are like us - they LOVE to eat good food & they also have four children that appreciate food so I knew one dessert wasn’t going to cut it. I am also in the process of making a very large 3 layered trifle with custard & cream on top. I will share the pic with you once it is finished :)

After all that we headed back into town for more festivities. Lots of entertainment - live music, bed race and then a parade at 4pm followed by a community barbecue. We got back into town for the last music session of the afternoon. If any of you are country music fans you may well know the name Ken Overcast - the singing cowboy. He also does a radio show. Well Ken & his family live & ranch here in Chinook. He is a great entertainer and also has a very talented family. His daughter, a wonderful musician & singer, is married to a rancher who is an excellent fiddle player & now their eldest daughter, Faith, has recorded her first CD & we got the pleasure of listening to them all this afternoon.

    Sugarbeet Music

Then in the parade, the kids of the family we are going to see tomorrow were dressed up in their kilts & playing the bag pipes etc.

    Bairds - kilts

The weather was absolutely gorgeous - t-shirt weather which is pretty incredible for mid October here.

Once the parade was over we watched some sheep shearing & then headed to eat.

    Sheep Shearing

The nights soon cool off here & it was back to the farm to milk the cow.

Although a busy day it was actually refreshing because we weren’t working. What’s the saying? A change is as good as a rest! Very true in this case.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend & we’ll see you next week

    Keep smiling :)

A sample of what is coming tonight!

    October 11th, 2007

    Hey folks!

I am so busy I really don’t know what to do next. I did get up early & go clean the cow barn so I have had my exercise :) Writing this quickly whilst Michael has gone to pick up lunch. Yes, it had to be take out today - no time for creativity in the kitchen although I did have plans. Oh well that can wait for tomorrow.

Asela started sending me card samples last night & they are FABULOUS! Her images will be released tonight. Here is one of the samples:

    Snowman with cardinal

You are in for such a treat so make sure you check in on the store tonight.

PLUS the new Thomas Kinkade images are coming tomorrow so more great stuff to look forward to.

    Have a wonderful day.

    Liz

    Harvey, Hilda & more!

    October 8th, 2007

Well folks, where have the last few days gone?! Friday & Saturday saw us getting a lot of rain which was a real blessing but also very muddy. For us to be green this time of year is very unusual but no complaints.

I finally managed to get all my tomatoes picked. Some of them did get affected by the frost but I saved alot. Of course most of them were green so they are now in box with newspaper & should ripen OK.

Still haven’t got a photo of Hazel - keep forgetting to take a camera with me when I go down there. Michael has trained her nicely & she now goes into her milking stall & stands still - well most of the time :) Her teats are still a little tight but they are getting looser. This morning I took 4 cups of cream off of one gallon of milk! I had over 12 cups of cream so made it all into butter then made buns (smaller version of muffins for the Americans reading this). The first set of buns overflowed everywhere - what a mess all over my oven. I have never had that happen before but all I can think of is that I used a new type of chocolate chip - white ones, all natural & very yummy. I think they must have reacted to the baking powder as they next two batches I only used 1/3 of the BP that I normally do & they came out fine. I now need to clean my over BIG TIME!

What else have I done today? I made custard, trifle & then a beef and vegetable pie for lunch. This afternoon the Thomas Kinkade labels finally arrived so I labeled 800 blocks of wood. I am only halfway. We still hope to release on Thursday but not saying for definite yet. After tea, Daniel & I put the calves away & watered the cows etc then we bounced on the trampoline for a few minutes. It was just dark & so the stars were just coming out.

I promised you last week that I would introduce you to the four new critters here on the farm. Here are Harvey & Hilda.

    Hilda & Harvey

They are very noisy when folks come or we head outside. We hope to let them out to roam free eventually but for now they are happy in with the Brahma chickens. Harvey can hiss really well but we can pick both of them up - we should do that everyday.

    Big Turkeys

These two turkeys do not have names and are a little too heavy to be picking up! Daniel was very excited yesterday as there were some loose feathers in the pen so he grabbed them.

Oh yes & yesterday Daniel got his toy milk cow & was milking her into a jug of milk. I thought that was so sweet - he knew exactly what to do.
    Have a great week y’all,

    Liz
